You heard of Miracle in the Meadowlands.
Well, this is Minshew in the Meadowlands.
Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback, Gardner Minshew II, stepped up to take on the New York Jets (3-9) after Jalen Hurts was ruled out with a left ankle sprain. Philadelphia (6-7) dominated against New York, 33-18.
It was an explosive start on the Jets offense, kick returner, Braxton Berrios had a beautiful 81-yard punt return on their opening possession. This return set the team up perfectly in the end zone. Three minutes later, the Jets are the first to put points on the board. On their next drive, they score again, however, Jets kicker, Alex Kessman, missed two of the team’s extra points.
The Eagles on their opening possession took control of their destiny. Minshew targeted tight end Dallas Goedert, with the help of running back Miles Sanders, to get the job done to match the Jets touchdown-to-touchdown.
Both teams marched back and forth down the field, putting up over 30 points total in the first half. It was a battle of defenses and turnovers, and ultimately, the Eagles’ defense came out on top in the second half. The Eagles allowed zero points in the second half.
Minshew II had a beautiful day with his first start as an Eagle. He threw for 20-of-25 for 242 yards and two touchdowns. He also had four carries for 11 rush yards. Sanders had 24 carries for 120 yards, but left the game in the fourth due to his recurring ankle injury. Goedert had himself a day with six carries for 105 yards and two touchdowns.
Zach Wilson, Jets quarterback, had an exceptional day as well. Wilson threw 23-of-28 for 226 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
Next week, the Philadelphia Eagles will have their well-needed bye week. The next week will allow key players on the Eagles offense to heal, such as Hurts, Sanders, and center Jason Kelce.
The team returns to Lincoln Financial Field to take on the Washington Football Team (5-6) on December 19, 2021.
