After a little more than a year of isolation and virtual award ceremonies, the 2021 Billboard Music Awards took over Los Angeles on May 23, 2021. Performances from this past year's Super Bowl halftime headliner, The Weeknd, and Twenty One Pilots rocked the block. Below are a list of the award winners from the 2021 Billboard Music Awards.
Award for Top 100 Billboard Artist - The Weeknd
The Weeknd is having a fantastic year. Having performed during the halftime show of Super Bowl LV, three straight years of having songs from "After Hours" in the charts for consecutive weeks, with this year being the "Save Your Tears" remix with Ariana Grande. His success is far from over. This award is just one of seven that The Weeknd will win tonight, after no wins nor nominations at the 2021 Grammy's, which you can read about here.
Award for Top Selling Song - "Dynamite" by BTS
BTS has also had an incredible year. Performances, hits after hits, and "Dynamite" was just one of those songs that you heard everywhere - because it was so catchy! BTS takes the award for Top Selling Song with this upbeat hit single. Like The Weeknd, BTS will also have an incredible night at the BBMAs.
Award for Top Country Female Artist - "Gabby Barrett"
Ms. Garrett takes home this award as well as two others tonight. "I've been performing for 10 years really hard," she said in her acceptance speech. "This has changed my life forever." The other awards she takes home tonight are "Top Collaboration" and "Top Country Song" with "I Hope." I wouldn't be surprised if she took home a "Best Breakout Artist" award soon, considering her hard work and dedication that led her to her first three Billboard Music Awards.
Award for Top Latin Artist - Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny took home the Top Latin Artist award as well as two other awards in the Latin categories. The Puerto Rican rapper and singer also has one Grammy, two Latin Grammys, six Billboard Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, two American Music Awards, and more. He also performed an emotional "Te Deseo Lo Mejor,"
Award for Billboard Icon Artist - P!nk
Presented by real-life friend Jon Bon Jovi, P!nk took home the Billboard Icon Artist Award, as she well deserved. She is 2013's Billboard Woman of the Year, 2020 Top Touring Artist, 2017 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, and a plethora of other awards. She sold over 90 million records worldwide since her debut. P!nk performed an acrobatic routine, joined by her daughter, to her song "Cover Me in Sunshine," before performing an emotional, acoustic version of " All I Know So Far." Picking up tempo, P!nk then performed a mash-up of some her more iconic hits, including, "Get the Party Started", "Who Knew", and "Just Like a Pill." P!nk graciously accepted the award after her performance, joking to Bon Jovi that she accepts the award as "an apology" after being sad at a young age finding out that Bon Jovi got married. Previous recipients of this award include Neil Diamond, Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, and Cher.
Award for Top Hot 100 Song - "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd
Fun Fact: The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” was in the Billboard charts for a total of 75 weeks (so far) with 43 of those weeks being in the Top 5, marking this song being the fourth-longest-charting song. On March 9, 2021, “Blinding Lights” received a 7× Platinum certification for having seven million sales in the United States.
Award for Top Rap Song - "Rockstar" by DaBaby ft Roddy Ricch
DaBaby took home the award for Top Rap Song for "Rockstar" featuring rapper Roddy Ricch. When walking up to accept his award, Billboard accidentally played "Rockstar" by Post Malone instead. DaBaby pointed to his trophy and mentioned, "It's me, it's me, I'll live with that," before continuing with his speech. "Rockstar" song debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Top 100 and stayed on the charts for multiple weeks. This became DaBaby's first, and Roddy Ricch's second, chart-topper and number 1 song on the Hip-Hop/R&B and Hot Rap charts.
Award for Billboard Change Maker 2021 - Trae tha Truth
Started in 202, the Billboard Change Maker Award focuses on “the artist or group that speaks truth to power through their music, celebrity, and community. They are socially conscious, politically aware, active in their community and charitable with time, money and/or influence to improve the lives of others.” Trae tha Truth, this year's recipient of the award, is an American rapper, songwriter, record executive, and activist from Houston, Texas. During his career, he released 11 studio albums, 26 mixtapes, and 2 albums in a duo group.
In addition to his musicianship, Trae tha Truth is an activist and started two organizations. The first one is "Angel by Nature," a charity that helps the impoverished youth in Texas, and the second is "Relief Gang," a non-profit organization originally aimed at helping people and rebuilding homes in the wake of Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Since starting, the organization expanded to help people in Puerto Rico and Louisiana. Due to his courageous work and non-stop efforts to helping others, Trae became Houston's "Hometown Hero" and every July 22 is known as "Trae Day" in the Texas community.
On July 15, 2020, Trae among 87 other individuals were arrested during a Black Lives Matter protest for Breonna Taylor, but that didn't stop his activism against police brutality in the Black community. During his acceptance speech of the Billboard Change Maker Award, Trae eluded to the urgency of needing justice for the late emergency room technician, "...we still gonna need justice for Breonna Taylor."
Award for Billboard Artist of the Decade - Drake
In a video that could only give you full-body chills, viewers got the chance to see a lot of people doubting Drake because of his background, doubting his ability to stay successful in the music industry, and finally calling him a "lucky guy," before sharing his success worldwide since stepping into the music scene. When asked who he wanted to have presented the award, he wanted his family and friends to be the ones to do so.
Award for Top Rock Artist - Machine Gun Kelly
Machine Gun Kelly took home Top Rock Artist, his first big award thus far in his career. During his emotional acceptance speech, Kelly reflected on his fifteen-year career and how it all lead to this award. He also encouraged his fans and supporters to keep following their dreams, inciting a powerful message: "Suspend logic and invite magic," he said. "Show the universe that it can't take your dream from you." Though this is his first televised award, Kelly also took home an award for Top Rock Album for his LP "Tickets to my Downfall." Before ending his speech, he had one more "thank-you", saying, "To the box that society keeps trying to put me in, you need stronger material, because you can't keep me in it,"
Award for Top Billboard 200 Album - "Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon" by Pop Smoke (accepted by mother, Audrey Jackson)
Accepted by his mother, Pop Smoke received the award for Top Billboard 200 Album for his album "Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon," In an emotional acceptance speech, his mother remembered her "young warrior," saying, "I thank you to the fans, for honoring the life and spirit of my son, so much that he continues to manifest as if he were still here in flesh.” Pop Smoke's album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard charts, with hit singles, "For the Night" and "What You Know About Love."
Award for Top Artist - The Weeknd
With his 10th win tonight and 19th overall, The Weeknd snags the award for Billboard's Top Artist of 2021. After a car-choreographed performance of "Save Your Tears," much different than his previous "After Hours"-esque performances, he took home the biggest award of the night. His album, "After Hours," catapulted him to absolute success the past three years, but it might be the end of an era. In a previous acceptance speech, The Weeknd hinted at a new era, saying, "The dawn is coming."
